How to configure Windows 95 Dialup Networking


First you have to be sure that Dial-Up Networking is installed.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs Icon.
  5. Select the Windows Setup Tab.
  6. Single-click Communications, then press the Details button.
  7. The Dial-Up Networking item should be checked. If it isn't, check it.
    You may be prompted for your Windows 95™ Disks or CD-ROM. Click OK.

Note: The following steps assumes you have the Dial-Up Networking support installed.

Step 2: Making sure the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are installed

  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Control Panel.
  4. Double-click the Network Icon.
  5. Verify the Dial-Up Adapter is present. If it isn't:
  6. Verify the TCP/IP Protocol is present. If it isn't:
  7. Click OK until you are asked to restart the system. After you restart, proceed to the next step.

Step 3. Setting up the connection

  1. Double-click the My Computer Icon.
  2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking Icon.
  3. Type in GetThru for the name of the computer you want to connect to.
  4. Your modem should already be displayed. If it isn't, consult your Windows 95™ documentation for information on how to set up your modem for use with Windows 95™.
  5. Click Next>.
  6. Area Code will be 900. The phone number will be 287-9265. And make sure that you are putting in any special codes to disable call waiting or to get an outside line.
  7. Click Next>, then Finish.
  8. Single-click the new GetThru icon with the RIGHT mouse button, and select Properties.
  9. Click the Server Type Button.
  10. The Type of Dial-Up Server should be set to PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet
  11. In the Advanced Options Section, make sure:
  12. Click on TCP/IP Settings.
  13. Make sure Server Assigned IP Address is selected.
  14. Make sure Specify Name Server Addresses is selected.
  15. Put in the following DNS Server IP Addresses:
  16. Use IP Header Compression should be Checked.
  17. Use Default Gateway on Remote Network should be Checked.
  18. Click OK twice.

Now you can connect

Double-click the new GetThru Icon. You will be prompted for your username and password. The username is "#guest" without the quotes, preceded by a pound (#) sign. Example:
