Hey guess what? I found the new easy registration process for domain names. Just go to www.register.com and find out if the domain name you are seeking, is taken. If not, there are about 4 or 6 simple screens to fill out. They need the demographic info for the contact, in addition to the email address. It is actually quite simple, and for the $70 fee, this is quite easy. They even give you a "coming soon" page. I have found at and now confirmed with Register.com, that they will provide the DNS resolution for your new domain, all for free. That now elimates the need for the troublesome PublicDNS. Register.com has a "change IP" link, which is actually how you update your DNS name record, without learning all the complexities of it. Very user friendly. In my experience, the PublicDNS service (even though it is free) was troublesome. They have very bad support, so in the event you DO have trouble, you are on your own. They do have a newsgroup, but my proxy would not let me out to see it, so where does that leave me? I was going to try EasyDNS when I found out that register.com does their own DNS all for the same 70 dollar fee.
I also wanted to mention that if you dont NEED a ".com" type of address, there are many other services out there. For example, there are some companies, like the NIC that can register other type of domain names. Please visit them to see what I mean.
And lastly on this note, if you get a little bit confused by some of this DNS registration information, or similar complexities, there are companies out there that will do alot of it for you. For instance, Server101.com will get you the domain name, setup your DNS, and host your website on a reliable set of machines. In addition, they are one of the VERY few companies who can also offer cgi scripting for dynamic information, and get this ... do it all for as little as $8.25 !!! That is impressive.
