The NT Option Pak 4, includes some additional features/applications/extensions. One of those is the SMTP server from Microsoft.
Below you will find the options I chose when installing the SMTP server on my main NT Server, which is my email gateway, among other things.
- I selected the IIS options. Actually called "Show Subcomponents"
- Under that, I found an option for "SMTP Service", and selected it.
- Upon double clicking the "SMTP Service" option, you can select some optional pieces of it. So I did that.
- I selected to install the "SMTP documentation" and the "SMTP Service" itself. These make up about 3.2Mb by their estimate.
- That is really all there is to install it.
Now we move on to configuration and customization options, after installation.
- Select the options on the new SMTP site, by using the Microsoft Management Console.
- Under the "SMTP Site" tab, I chose the following :
- Description : NTServ2 SMTP
- IP address : 192.168.1.3
- Incoming ....
- TCP Port : 25
- Limit connections : unselected (no limit)
- Connection Time-out : 600 seconds (10 minutes by my math)
- Enable Logging : selected and I use the W3C extended format
- Outgoing ....
- All outgoing matches Incoming exactly, and I left "Limit connections" unselected.
- Under the "Operators" tab, I chose the following :
- Operators : Administrators group
- Under the "Messages" tab, I chose the following :
- Limit Messages : unselected, even though it will NOT forward any message over 2Mb
- Maximum messages per connection : unselected
- Maximumum number of recipients : 100
- Send copy to : empty
- Badmail directory : default
- Under the "Delivery" tab, I chose the following :
- Local Queue:
- Max Retries : 48
- Retry interval : 60 minutes
- Remote Queue:
- Max Retries : 48
- Retry interval : 60 minutes
- Max hop count : 15
- Masquerade domain : empty
- Fully qualified name : ntserv2.getthru.com
- Smart Host : mailhost
- Attempt to direct deliver before sending : yes
- Perform reverse DNS : no
- Outbound Security : No authentication
- Under the "Directory Security" tab, I chose the following :
- Defaults for all except Relay Restrictions :
- I allow relaying
- Allow any computer that successfully authenticates to relay : yes
Keep in mind that I have shown this situation for a mail server behind a firewall, so I allow relaying, since nobody should be getting thru my firewall. In addition, "mailhost" as shown above, is a name map to my personal mail server upstream from me. All of my hosts on the internal network now point to my new mail gateway, also know as mailhost to them. This makes configuration of the mail clients much easier on the staff.
