Setup of Micron 300Mhz Transport Trek2 NT
Important Info :
First I had to create a DOS boot disk, with fdisk and other utilities on it, so I could remove the current partitions. The machine came in with Window98 on it, and would not allow me to remove the booted partition. So the boot diskette fixed this problem, but booting on diskette, and allowing anything on the hard disk we wanted. Use Paul’s pc’s c:\cybermax directory to find a dos boot disk area, if you cant create one yourself.
Machine would error out while starting about the diskette, so I just hit F1 to continue, went into the bios, and configured it properly.
There was problems with the 3com 3c575 card bus adapter, so we are using a 3c569D combo card.
Began Fresh Install of NT4.0. Insert CDRom and Diskette number 1 into respective drives. Power up machine.
At this point I have already made sure to have a 700Mb partition to install the Windows NT server into. I will be selecting NTFS for filesystem when prompted.
Setup should be :
C to create a 700Mb drive. Install the software into C:, and set if for NTFS. Machine will reboot, and convert the filesystem from FAT to NTFS.
Accept \winnt for the directory, and hit <ENTER> for an exhaustive search. It begins to copy files.
Display : 640 x 480 60 Hz 16 colors
Eject CDRom and diskette(s) and reboot as prompted
After the machine reboots, NT is fully installed. We can now begin our install of service packs, software, optional network components, etc.
At this point it is important to understand the disk layout that will be used (required) for the setup of some of the software. I have chosen to go with a setup like this :
Partition Usage Size Format
Of course the first thing to do is to logon. So use the default Administrator account, and the password is defined as above.
Insert the NT 4.0 CDRom and we will begin the IIS (Internet Information Server) 2.0 Install. Close the window that appears when the cd is inserted and click on the icon on the desktop for IIS install.
I created a directory on the D: drive, called secure, for any info we want to keep secure of course. This is the area we will use now. Under that main directory, we will need a few other directories. First one is "InetPub" for the publishing of all of our internet info. The second directory is "InetSrv". This is for the IIS source files. I feel that they should not be mixed together with the others, and now we can control our shares. For the IIS install, we use the www and ftp subdirectories under InetPub for the locations of those files. You will have to create these directories also.
Right click on the "network neighborhood" icon, so that we can add some additional services/components. They are as follows :
There were problems with the display driver, so I installed SP3, but it didnt help. Micron ended up emailing me the display drivers and they are contained on the diskette. Install them now, and setup resolution to 1024 x 768 , 65k colors, ???Hz.
Installed Resource kit next, by inserting Resource Kit CD. Click on "Install Resource Kit". Use the same User Name and Company Name as we used in the NT install. Install into destination directory of D:\apps\NTResKit. Choose custom and select all !! Also install Web Administration.
Go into explorer and modify the attributes on c:\boot.ini. Turn off the archive and read only bits. Now edit the file, and change the timeout variable from 30 to 5 seconds. Finally, turn back on the archive and read only bits on the file.
While still in explorer, set the options for full detailed display, and other options so that we can see all the files.
After rebooting, install MS Proxy 2.0. (You must have the SP3 installed first, and the caching must be on an NTFS drive). Install using these parameters :
