Setup of Dell 300Mhz PowerEdge 2200 - NT
Important Info :
Open machine and add the other ethernet card, the FDDI card from 3com. We will use it later on.
Reloaded Operating System, because it was not configured as a Primary Domain Controller.
Began Fresh Install of NT4.0. Insert CDRom and Diskette number 1 into respective drives. Power up machine. At this point I have already made sure to have a 1Gig partition to install the Windows NT server into. I will be selecting NTFS for filesystem when prompted.
Setup should be :
Domain : DOMAIN
Display : 800 x 600 72 Hz 65k colors
Eject CDRom and diskette(s) and reboot as prompted
After the machine reboots, NT is fully installed. We can now begin our install of service packs, software, optional network components, etc.
At this point it is important to understand the disk layout that will be used (required) for the setup of some of the software. I have chosen to go with a setup like this :
Partition Usage Size Format
Of course the first thing to do is to logon. So use the default Administrator account, and the password is defined as above.
Insert the NT 4.0 CDRom and we will begin the IIS (Internet Information Server) 2.0 Install. Close the window that appears when the cd is inserted and click on the icon on the desktop for IIS install.
I created a directory on the D: drive, called secure, for any info we want to keep secure of course. This is the area we will use now. Under that main directory, we will need a few other directories. First one is "InetPub" for the publishing of all of our internet info. The second directory is "InetSrv". This is for the IIS source files. I feel that they should not be mixed together with the others, and now we can control our shares. For the IIS install, we use the www and ftp subdirectories under InetPub for the locations of those files. You will have to create these directories also. And finally, I chose to add the ODBC (Open Data Base Connectivity) drivers for SQL Server.
Right click on the "network neighborhood" icon, so that we can add some additional services/components. They are as follows :
While still in the ‘hood, add another network card. Select the adapters tab, and click on add. Choose "Have Disk" and insert the diskette from the FDDI box. When that completes, click on the "bindings" tab, so that NT will reload and bind the protocols for us, to the new card. I chose to switch the 3c905 card’s address at this point to 192.168.97.1 / 255.255.255.0. Then I used an address of 192.168.96.1 / 255.255.255.0 for the FDDI card.
Setup DHCP as a server/service on this machine by going into the Admin tools. Serve addresses on the 3c905’s network, which is x.x.97.x series. So I used a start address of 192.168.97.11, and an end address of 192.168.97.200. This seems as though it will provide plenty of room for now.
Installed Microsoft Front Page for web page editing (Intranet type stuff). Insert NT Cdrom into drive, and choose to install programs. Using the control panel applet, install g:\Frontpg\frontpg\setup.exe. Use a destination directory of D:\apps\FrontPage. Selected to use client software and server extensions (using the custom option). No personal web servers. Let it use its own program group name.
Installed tape drive/drivers next. Use control panel’s Tape drive applet. Click on have disk, and install the Dell DDS3 disk 1 (NT4.0) diskette. Choose Sony 4mm and click ok. Enter A:\ for the OEM Tape Device Files. Go into drivers tab next, and click on add. Select Sony 4mm and restart computer when prompted.
Installed Resource kit next, by inserting Resource Kit CD. Click on "Install Resource Kit". Use the same User Name and Company Name as we used in the NT install. Install into destination directory of D:\apps\NTResKit. Choose custom and select all !!
Go into explorer and modify the attributes on c:\boot.ini. Turn off the archive and read only bits. Now edit the file, and change the timeout variable from 30 to 5 seconds. Finally, turn back on the archive and read only bits on the file.
While still in explorer, set the options for full detailed display, and other options so that we can see all the files.
Add Service Pak 3. Insert the Dell Service Pack CD, and when it comes up in html, find the link for installing it. Click on that link, and it will launch the service pack install. Install with and uninstall directory. Restart the PC when prompted.
After rebooting, install MS Proxy 2.0. (You must have the SP3 installed first, and the caching must be on an NTFS drive). Install using these parameters :
