Setup of Tiger K6-2 400Mhz NT Workstation 4.0
Important Info :
Open machine and add the ethernet card, the 3com, 3c905bTX. We will use it for the NT install.
We will be loading NT as a workstation client.
Began Fresh Install of NT4.0. Setup BIOS to support bootable CDRom, and insert CDRom into drive. Power up machine.
At this point I have already made sure to have a 1Gig partition to install the Windows NT into. I will be selecting NTFS for filesystem when prompted.
Setup should be :
- Standard PC
- AutoDetect Video
- XT-AT keyboard
- US English
- Logitech Mouse Port
Format 1Gig partition to be NTFS.
- User Name : Paul A. Luzzi
- Company : Paul A. Luzzi
- CD Key : *****-OEM-*******-*****
- Computer Name : NTWS
- Administrator Pswd : ******
Display : 640 x 480 16 colors (Currently the AGP video card is not supported by NT, that comes in sp4)
Eject CDRom and diskette(s) and reboot as prompted
After the machine reboots, NT is fully installed. We can now begin our install of service packs, software, optional network components, etc.
At this point it is important to understand the disk layout that will be used (required) for the setup of some of the software. I have chosen to go with a setup like this :
Partition Usage Size Format
- C : Winnt 1 Gig NTFS
- D : Apps 1 Gig NTFS
- N/A : 2.x Gig Unconfigured
- G : CDRom
Of course the first thing to do is to logon. So use the default Administrator account, and the password is defined as above.
Run the administrator's tools, disk admin utility.
- Create a 1024 Mb partition right after the C Partition.
- Rename the CDRom drive to G: if needed
- Name the newly created partition D:
- Commit the changes.
- Format the new D: drive to be ntfs.
Insert the NT 4.0 CDRom and we will begin the additional component install. Close the window that appears when the cd is inserted.
I created a few directories on the D: drive, called apps, home, install, misc, and secure.
We want to get the display adapters setup properly now, so make sure to get the ATI installation CDRom, and insert. Note that when we do this, the display changes will require a restart, but the adapter is still unrecognized. This is just preparations for the sp4 install later. Run the command to install the drivers as follows :
- d:\atisetup (or whatever the cdrom drive is listed as)
Right click on the "network neighborhood" icon, so that we can add some additional services/components. They are as follows :
Copy the NTWS4.0 CDRom's i386 subdirectory to the d drive.
- Copy to d:\install\ntws4.0\i386
Insert the Service Pack 4 CRom into the drive so we can use it.
- Copy the Service Pack's i386 subdirectory to the d drive as d:\install\servpack\sp4\i386
- Install the service pack, by either selecting that option from the popped up browser window, or by clicking on the update.exe file under the i386/update directory
- It will want to reboot upon completion.
- We also want to add the web administration stuff from that disk while its in.
- Reboot one more time for safety.
Setup the display after the reboot now.
- The adapter should be properly configured
- Setup the display settings to 1024 x 768 x 65k colors
- Setup the screen saver to time out to blank screen in 15 minutes
Insert the NT Resource Kit 4.0 CRom into the drive so we can use it.
- Copy the Resource Kit's i386 subdirectory to the d drive as d:\install\reskit\i386
- Install the resource kit, by clicking on "Install Resource Kit".
- Use the same User Name and Company Name as we used in the NT install.
- Install into destination directory of D:\apps\NTResKit.
- Choose custom and select all !!
- Reboot upon completion.
We will install the Korn utility to give Unix like remote admin capability next.
- Map the I: drive by typing "net use i: \\ntserver\install$"
- Install the korn shell version 2.0b4 into d:\apps\korn\2.0b4. It will create the directory for you.
- Install these tools : base_win32, base_update_win32, perl_win32, xbase_win32, and let them use their own group
- Reboot upon completion.
- Reinstall sp4 by clicking on the d:/install/servpack/sp4/update/update.exe file.
- Reboot upon completion.
Install WinZip next, as we will need it for the next group of product installs.
- From the I: drive (or \\ntserver\install$ if not mapped), choose winzip\winzip95.exe.
- Extract and install it into d:\apps\winzip
- Choose the custom setup, of course
- Answer no to program groups and icons options
- Associate it with all archives, and explorer shell extensions
- Dont use the startup groups, and dont put any icons on the desktop
Install the Big Brother network client for nt next.
- run the installation zip file from the I:\bigbrother\nt\v1.04e directory and extract into d:\apps\bigbrother
- Bring up a command window, and change directory to d:\apps\bigbrother
- rename the bbnt-x86.exe to bbnt.exe
- install by typing "bbnt -y -install 207.86.37.1"
- Goto the control panel, and select services. Make sure that the big brother service is running as administrator.
- Make the permissions on bbnt.exe and the config tool, to administrator only.
- Run the configuration tool for big brother, to set any specific variables, like which disks to monitor.
Install the subnet calculator tool next.
- run the executable from the i:\nettools\subnetcalc directory
- install into d:\apps\subnetcalc\install
- run the subsequent file, and install into d:\apps\subnetcalc
Install the netscape next.
- run the i:\netscape\winntand95\cc32d461_128bit.exe file.
- create a few directories, specifically, d:\apps\netscape, d:\apps\netscape\v4.61, d:\home\pluzzi, d:\home\pluzzi\netscape.
- Install into d:\apps\netscape\v4.61
- Choose custom
- Deselect all file associations
- Rerun the sp4 update again, and reboot
Setup the default timeout, and swap files now.
- Right click on my computer, and choose properties.
- Choose the startup/shutdown tab, and set the timeout to 5 seconds
- On the same tab, make sure that the stop error just sends an admin alert. No reboot, or other stuff in case the problem is hardware
- Under the performance tab, setup the d: drive to have a swap file of 64 to 128 Mb in size
Configure the proxy server next.
- Lauch the control panel, and choose the internet icon
- Setup the proxy to be http://ntserver:8000
Install IE5.0 next.
- Install i:\msie\v5.0\ie5setup.exe
- Create directories d:\apps\msie and d:\apps\msie\v5.0
- Install into d:\apps\msie\v5.0
- Choose custom, and select all default properites/plug ins, plus any that make sense
- Allow all associations to be given to IE
Must copy a few programs from administrator, to other users desktops next.
- Copy from c:\winnt\profiles\administrator\desktop\start\programs, to c:\winnt\profiles\WHATEVERUSER\desktop\start\programs
- I copied subnet calc folder, and the resource kit folder
- Select the properties and securities tabs on those directories to make sure the new user has permission to run them.
Create new shares for drives for backup purposes next.
- Create new c drive share called CDrive.
- Create new d drive share called DDrive.
- Give permissions on both, to admin, network, and system, on both the NEW and MAIN domains. Also give permissions to admin on the local domain.
Launch explorer, and set the options for full detailed display, and other options so that we can see all the files.
Final steps :
- Created Emergency Repair diskette.
- Added the disk administrator info to the diskette.
