This doesnt seem to like any NexGen chips !!! I guess that is why they call it "Solaris for Intel" (although oddly enough, here it is running on a Cyrix chip?).
Current System Configuration :
Now the fun stuff :
Disk setup parameters for my 1.6 Gig drive :
Also one last thing. I dont like the way solaris does a few things.
I made the following changes :
Now for the optional software :
GCC:
TCL/TK:
APACHE (about 1 hour)
SUDO (about 10 minutes)
SAMBA (about 1 hour)
QPopper (about 30 minutes)
SAR (seconds ...)
top (about 3 minutes)
Special Notes : This product WILL NOT install on NexGen chips. I
always try a multitude of different procs/apps/servers/Opeating Systems.
It found all controllers, motherboard, floppy, keyboard, mouse (no drives)
Make sure diskette is NOT write protected when you start.
It will switch to Xwindow mode, so just write down and accept

Patch, Security, Y2K Supplement Information :
I finally updated and patched my Solaris 2.6 system on October 25, 1999.
Sun Solve's WebSite is where I got the information, on what patches to install. I had to download from two different areas. One is for the Y2K patches and the other is for the security patches. Keep in mind that I dont run any external ftp servers, or some of the other stuff, like sendmail, that are so vulnerable to many companies. These types of fixes didnt apply to me, but may to you. (I renamed the patches to shorten the names, and make them more understandable).
It is extremely important to be sure that you have enough free space available in /, /usr, /var, and /opt, so that you dont have incomplete packages installed. The recommended minimum is 4Mb.
For what its worth, I installed these packages into /usr/local/Install/patches. They will create many subdirectories and files underneath themselves, upon the untarring process, so be prepared for even more space to be used up.
I installed the following patches, in this order :.
$ su Password: <type your root password> # uncompress 2.6_x86_y2k.tar.Z # tar -xvf 2.6_x86_y2k.tar # gzip -9 2.6_x86_y2k.tar # cd 2.6_x86_y2000_ALL # ./install_cluster # "y" to confirm continue # more /var/sadm/install_data/Solaris_2.6_x86_y2000_ALL_log --> to be sure all is ok. I recieved errors for the following : 105622-14 --> already applied but its ok. # cd / # /etc/shutdown -g0 -y -i6 --> to reboot and make sure only new patches are in use
$ su Password: <type your root password> # uncompress 2.6_x86_sec.tar.Z # tar -xvf 2.6_x86_sec.tar # gzip -9 2.6_x86_sec.tar # cd 2.6_x86_Recommended # ./install_cluster # "y" to confirm continue # more /var/sadm/install_data/Solaris_2.6_x86_Rcommended_log --> to be sure all is ok. I recieved errors for the following patches : 106126-08 --> already applied 105211-25 --> already applied 105622-14 --> already applied 105394-11 --> already applied 106194-03 --> already applied 105801-05 --> already applied 106829-01 --> already applied 105567-08 --> already applied 106363-02 --> already applied but its ok. # cd / # /etc/shutdown -g0 -y -i6 --> to reboot and make sure only new patches are in use
For reference, I have included a link to the Solaris ability to set/change Solairs network interface parameters while the system is up. I always had to keep referring to my email for this and finally decided to put it on the web.
These are a few links to some good information on how to cable up a serial console, if you are not using the graphics card, or need to use a remote console solution. Sun Cables and Sun Cables 2
