Oracle 7.3.3.0.0 Installation on Client Machines
Installation
December 18th 1997
Before beginning this process, you must be sure that any toolbars, like
MicroSoft Office specifically, are not configured at the top of the screen.
Anywhere else but the top is fine. This will create a problem for Oracle
later on. If you need to move it, just click and drag it to another location.
Following are the steps needed to perform an installation of Oracle
Client Tools. This consists of the 7.3.3 client cd and the Developer 2000
cd. Heres what needs to be done :
- · Create a new folder called "Old 16 bit Oracle" and
move all old apps into it.
- · Remove "t:\dev2k\bin" from the path line in c:\autoexec.bat.
- · Rename "c:\windows\oracle.ini" to "c:\windows\oracle.old"
or move to a savefiles directory.
- · Rename "c:\windows\vsl.ini" to "c:\windows\vsl.old"
or move to a savefiles directory.
- · Edit the "c:\windows\win.ini" file to comment out
or remove the oracle paragraph.
- · Map the N: drive on local machine to \\edumetnt\oracle_nt
Those are the pre-install steps. Now lets move on to the install steps
:
- · Insert the Developer 2000 Server CD in the drive on the PC.
After about 1 minute it will "auto play" and begin installation
automatically.
- · Choose "English" for the language.
- · Choose "Edu-Met Interactive Systems" for the company
name.
- · Keep "c:\orawin95" for the setup directory, it is
as good as anything else.
- · Let the installer add that directory to your path line automatically
for you.
- · Choose custom installation, and install all products, EXCEPT
(this should total 378Mb in 24 products) :
- INTERSOLV
- any ODBC drivers
- Oracle Terminal
- any OCSM pieces
- · Select OK to load the MicroSoft specific files.
- · Accept the defaults for ALL files and directory names from
the installer.
- · Once the install completes, you may install the adobe acrobat
reader, by typing : "c:\orawin95\acrobat\ar32e30.exe", but it
is an optional step.
- · Reboot the PC.
- · Copy "t:\dev2k\network\admin\*.ora" to c:\orawin95\network\admin"
to allow connections to the server (actually these files allow the name
translation from "sco7" to something usable by oracle)
- · Add shortcuts to the desktop for the following items, as shown
on attached pages :
- Forms Builder
- Edumet Master (both sco7 and test3)
- Edumet Maintenance (both sco7 and test3)
- SQL*Plus (both sco7 and test3)
That takes care of the Developer/Runtime tools. Now we need to take
care of the Database Admin tools.
- · Remove the Developer 2000 Server CD
- · Insert the "Client 7.3.3" CD (It will also "auto
play" after about 1 minute).
- · Accept the default choices for language, client, directory,
etc, because they should carry over from the prior installation of Dev2k.
- · Install the following components (should be 24 Mb in 4 products)
:
- Administrative Toolbar
- Oracle Enterprise Manager 1.3.5.0.0
- Oracle Enterprise Manager Doc 1.3.5.0.0
- Oracle Enterprise Manager SDK 1.3.5.0.0
- · Now finally go create a shortcut for the "Admin Toolbar"
to the desktop. I also prefer to add it to the startup group, but that
is my preference.
I dont know if this is of any value or not, but this used the be the document I worked off of before creating the one above. This one is much simpler, but still has some good info on it. keep in mind that in those days, with 16 bit applications, you could install them over the network to a "tools" drive (t:\) and run them from any pc, using the shared t:\ drive. They were the easy days.
