Oracle 8 Install on Micron Laptop (NT 4.0 Server)
Important Info : There was currently no taskbar present
Also be sure the check the admin work performed before attempting to install Oracle.
Began Fresh Install of Oracle 8.0.3 on NT4.0. Insert CDRom drive. The
machine will "autoplay" the CD and launch the Oracle Installer
automatically. At this point I have already made sure to have a 1Gig partition
to install the Oracle Server into. I setup NTFS for the filesystem type.
Once the Installer begins :
Select English for language Install into c:\orant (on a single drive
machine. If possible, use its own drive completely.

- Should Total up to 325Mb in 35 Products
Choose Install and Answer Questions :
- · Starter Database Options : Custom
- · Leave password for Oracle_Security_Service_Admin as "oss"
- · Install Documentation to Hard Disk Drive (about 70 + Mb)
- · Keep moving mouse around if you havent disabled the screen
saver. Since I forgot to disable it the first time thru, the screen saver
came on, and when I tried to get if off, Dr Watson came up.
- · Upon completion of the Installer, Database Assistant tries
to launch. However, I also got Dr. Watson to appear here, and got a "javaw.exe"
error. More info to follow on this.
Because of our friend Dr. Watson, in reference to the java exception
error, the story went like this …..
- · I tried to manually run the Oracle Database Assistant. This
didnt help. Still got the javaw.exe error.
- · So I rebooted and reinstalled Service Pack 3. This didnt help.
Still getting same error.
- · So I loaded IE4.0, with its new java runtime, off of my Web
Server CD (D:\msie\32bit\ie3inst.exe).
- Select no for the active desktop !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- United States for channels
- Default directory for folder location is fine (…Program Files\Plus!\Microsoft
Internet)
- But this didnt help either. Believe it or not, the same error appears.
- · So I tried removing both data Assistant and Java Runtime.
- · Then reinstall both data Assistant and Java Runtime. This
didnt help either.
- · Next step was to remove all Oracle and start again. This is
accomplished by :
- Went into Control Panel | Services and stopped the TNS Listener
- While still in Control Panel | Services, stop the WWW Publishing Service
- Remove all Oracle products thru the installer
- Remove the remaining pieces, like the directory and installer, thru
explorer
- Remove the Oracle key from the registry
- And finally reboot
- This didnt help either. The SAME error keeps coming up.
- · As a last resort, I changed Display Settings to 800 x 600
with 65k colors. (Even though the showed this already). Note that this
immediately looked much better. There seemed to be more color depth. (Looking
back now, when the original view of the installer comes up, if the graphic
is not perfectly clear, dont even waste your time trying to install Oracle
8 !!!!)
- · Tried to Install once more with above setup, (and screen saver
disabled, this time !!)
- This seemed to allow completion of the Oracle Installation, but STILL
didnt launch the Database Assistant.
- So to be on the safe side, I exited the Oracle Installer, and rebooted.
- · Then explicitly run the Database Assistant to create the new
database.
Here are the Options on the Database Assistant :
- · Create a Database
- · Choose custom, that goes without saying …..
- · No cartridges
- · Medium sized instance
- · DB Name : nt8
- · SID Name : nt8
- · Init filename : c:\orant\database\initnt8.ora
- · Password : ******
- · Defaults for all of the next option, except to choose 4 Log
File members
- · Accept defaults for all tablespaces except to change the extensions
to *.dbf (for consistency with naming with unix)
- · Accept defaults for log file names except for extensions of
*.dbf
- · Checkpoint interval of 4000
- · Turn on Archive Log and accept all defaults for it
- · Accept SGA defaults
- · Accept Trace file defaults
- · Save info to batch script as c:\orant\admin\create_nt8.bat
And finally get a cup of coffee, or take a lunch while running the above
created script. At a dos prompt, run the c:\orant\admin\create_nt8.bat.
This will take about 75 minutes on a 133Mhz NT4.0 laptop machine.
- · Switch to the New Oracle 8 Listener by :
- · Go into Control Panel | Services · Stop the Oracle
TNS Listener · While highlighting the TNS Listener, click the startup
button and make manual for startup option · Start the Oracle TNS
Listener80 instead · While highlighting the TNS Listener80, click
the startup button and make automatic for startup option
- · Run SQL*Net Easy Config :
- · Modify such that the name of the SID is "nt8" not
"ORCL"
- · Delete Example-???? Listeners
- · Add a new service with the following options :
- Service Name : nt8
- Protocol : TCP/IP
- Host Name : ntdemo
- Port Number : 1521
- SID Name : nt8
- · Run oradim80 from the command line or explorer window. It
is located in c:\orant\bin. Edit "nt8" and set the max number
of dba’s to be 10.
- · Shutdown and restart the laptop alltogether. This will make
the new databases and listeners startup properly, and will properly terminate
and/or abandon the old versions with old listener and "ORCL"
SID.
- · I forgot to copy c:\orant\network\admin\*.ora to c:\orant\net80\admin
directory, so I needed to do that and reboot again.
- · Add environment variables of :
- ORACLE_SID : NT8
- ORACLE_HOME : c:\orant
- · Run Server Manager and launch the product user profiles by
doing :
- svrmgr30
- connect system/manager
- @c:\orant\dbs\pupbld.sql
- · ftp to the sco box, and get the weekendunix.exp from the export
area, and drop it into the c:\temp directory on the laptop.
- · Create a tablespace of "edumet". Use these options
:
- Launch the Storage manager from Enterprise manager window tools
- Use a name of "edumet"
- Datafile of c:\orant\database\edumet_1.dbf size of 1 mb.
- Make sure autoextend is on
- Increment of 10240k
- Max is Unlimited
- · Create a user "edumet". Use these options :
- Launch the Security Manager from the Enterprise manager window tools
- Use a name of "edumet"
- Default profile and password is ******
- Use a default tablespace of "edumet" and temp tablespace
of "temp"
- · Modify the init.ora file for the Nt8 database. Needs to include
3 lines not originally included. They are to make the rbs public, set the
cursors to 200, and files.
- · In a dos window, bring up the import utility for 8.0.3 This
will not work in gui mode properly. (Takes about 25 minutes)
- cd \temp
- imp80
- edumet/edumet
- filename is weekendunix.exp
- Bring in just the edumet objects
- Yes to ignore errors and defaults for all else.
